LED Driver Lifespan: MTBF, L70, and How Long They Really Last
A datasheet says "50,000 hours." You do the math: that is 5.7 years of continuous operation. So why do some installations need driver replacement after just 2-3 years?
The answer is that rated lifespan and real-world lifespan are different things. This article explains what those numbers actually mean, what kills drivers early, and how to pick the right spec for your project's expected service life.
The Three Metrics That Matter

Why Drivers Fail Early
1. Heat is the #1 killer
Every 10°C above the rated operating temperature roughly halves electrolytic capacitor life. An IP20 indoor driver mounted inside a sealed light fixture can easily run 20°C hotter than ambient. If the ambient is 35°C (common in summer), internal component temps can hit 75-85°C — well above the typical 60°C design point.
- IP67 waterproof units: Better heat dissipation through metal case + silicone potting. Rated for -30 to +60°C. Typical lifespan: 50,000h.
- IP20 indoor units: Depend on fixture ventilation. In sealed housings, expect 40-60% shorter life than rated.
- Adapters: Plastic enclosure traps more heat. Typical lifespan: 30,000h.
2. Voltage spikes and surges
Grid voltage fluctuations (especially in developing markets) stress input capacitors and MOVs. A driver rated for AC 190-264V may survive a 280V transient once or twice but repeated surges degrade components faster than normal wear.
3. Running near full load
At 90-100% rated load, ripple current through output capacitors increases. This generates more heat and accelerates aging. The rule we recommend at CHUGAO:
Running a driver at 70-80% capacity instead of 95% can extend effective lifespan by 30–50%.
